Excessive postrotary nystagmus duration in learning-disabled children.

چکیده

The Southern California Sensory Integration Test results of 109 learning-disabled children were reviewed and analyzed to investigate the hypothesis that learning-disabled children with excessive postrotary nystagmus durations display greater neuropsychological impairment than learning-disabled children with normal or depressed postrotary nystagmus. The findings supported the hypothesis that learning-disabled children judged to have relatively greater neuropsychological involvement exhibited significantly longer postrotary nystagmus durations. Data analysis revealed that six Southern California Sensory Integration Tests assumed to measure cortical level functions shared significant variance with excessive Southern California Postrotary Nystagmus Test (SCPNT) scores. A similar relationship was not found for normal or depressed SCPNT scores. A connection between cortical level versus brain-stem level central nervous system dysfunction, nystagmus, and learning disorder is discussed.

Patterns of Postrotary NystagIllus in Three Learning - Disabled Children ( vestibular sfmulation , sensory integration , single subject research )

This study explores the effect of a program of sensory integration therapy, with emphasis on vestibular stzmulation actzvities, on the duration of postrotary nystagmus zn three learning-disabled children. The single-subject methodology employed allowed a more individualistic and longitudinal investigation of nystagmus patterns in the three subjects. The graphic and statistical analysis of the d...

Validity of the Postrotary Nystagmus Test for Measuring Vestibular Function

This study examined the validity of the Postrotary Nystagmus (PRN) test as a measure of vestibular functioning by examining the relations of scores from the PRN test with those from other variables measuring similar functions and through conducting a group comparison study. The PRN test is one of 17 tests included in the Sensory Integration and Praxis Tests (SIPT). Using SIPT scores from 575 ch...

Sensory-processing disorder in children with cochlear implants.

We examined sensory-processing disorder (SPD) in children with cochlear implants and explored the relationship between SPD and duration of hearing loss or duration of cochlear implant use. Caregivers of 30 children completed the Sensory Profile Questionnaire (SPQ). Seventy percent of the children showed "at-risk" or "different" behaviors in one or more of five categories of the SPQ: auditory, v...

Modification of the postrotary nystagmus test for evaluating young children.

This article explores the use of the postrotary nystagmus (PRN) test for children younger than current norms (children 4.0 yr-8.11 yr). In the first study, 37 children ages 4-9 yr were examined in the standard testing position and in an adult-held adapted position to determine whether holding a child affected the reflex. Because the position did not affect the reflex, in the second study, PRN i...
